Mom, on the other hand calls me at least twice a week.
So, Daddy says, "Hi. We'll I'm calling because Mom is being difficult about Christmas gifts. She won't tell me what to get her. She keeps telling me to just talk to you."
We proceeded to talk about Mom and what she really wants. He wants to go shopping with me when I get to CA on the 23rd. I know that what Mom wants more than anything is one of those diamond anniversary bands. I also know that Daddy won't buy it because he thinks that he'll get the wrong thing. Tonight he told me a story about trying to buy her jewelry early in their marriage and "not getting it right."
And I sat there smiling because Daddy had called me for help. When usually it is the other way around.
This summer, Daddy was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease (more like Muhammed Ali than Michael J. Fox- think stiff and quiet as opposed to shaking). And tonight, like many nights, I was reminded that our time is shorter than we would like-- he has stories to tell and gifts to buy. I just need to be better about offering to help.
