Cup o' Reality
Appreciating Teachers, New and Old

I still don’t know what is up with the graphics. But, I also don’t have the down time to find a new layout. Please be patient.

Actually I am putting all of my extra frenetic energy into two other projects right now. This is good as I need a break from job applications and lesson planning. My lessons are mostly planned out from now until the end of school. They focus on a minimum of paper grading and a maximum of students working. I have opted to NOT teach a formal research paper this semester. If I’m there next year I’ll do it then. But the idea of grading research in May and June is crappy!

So, I’m also Student Council Advisor at my school. This has become an area that I am absolutely passionate about. I have zillions of goals and ideas. Student Council is possibly the only thing that I am sad about leaving behind. (Well, besides my friends). The first week in May is National Teacher Appreciation week. I have been having a blast plotting gifts for the teacher’s boxes every day, posters for the staff room, 3 different door signs for throughout the week, the Friday breakfast, and buying all of the teachers cute new mouse pads. We are hosting a guessing game quiz: “Guess the teacher’s Kindergarten Pic.” Hopefully more teachers turn in pictures. Next weekend will be spent messing with the school scanner… Yep, you guessed it, my picture involves blonde pig-tails, red gingham dress and matching hair bows, a Cabbage Patch necklace and lace!! This whole thing is totally up Camp Counselor Spunky’s alley! It is like being a secret pal for the whole staff. And I’m a great secret pal

Then sometime last week I found out that my high school choir director is retiring. I had gotten a note on that classmates site. So, I replied and offered up my help. Little did I know what I was getting into! Heck, I live here in Minnesota and the whole shindig is being thrown in California. I probably can’t even go to any of it. But, after a bunch of e-mail back and forth I ended up on the committee, darn me and my good ideas. I am responsible for contacting music dept alumni from classes 1991-1996. It is a really weird feeling to e-mail people that I don’t remember, people who I know don’t remember me and even stranger to e-mail people who I didn’t like! Fingers are crossed that time heals some wounds!

But, I would like to share with you some of my ire at that classmates site. So, I have a list of something like well over 150 people to attempt to get in touch with. I have paid the exorbitant fees to that site, because, well, it really is the only place that people join. Really, ‘cuz I looked at the other places, no one is there. And I don’t want to pay a bunch of places either. So, Mom pulled out my old yearbooks (An aside, scary to have her open up those bad boys… there is shit in there she doesn’t need to see!) because they are in the closet at her house, not mine! She read off lists and lists of people as I typed them up. Some are being eliminated as they are after class of 1996. But it is a lot of people to e-mail in a short time.

Anyhow, yesterday I e-mailed like 25. And if you have ever sifted through that classmates site it isn’t exactly easy. It isn’t hard, but it is time consuming! So, after 25, I get cut off. Now, I can respect anti-spam measures and all, really. But, I’m not spam!! I figured it was OK, that I would send 25 more today. But, NO, I got cut off after 2. So, What-The Fuck?! I e-mailed the site to see what can be done… damnit… I’m paying good money for this!

So, hey if you happen to know any Oak Ridge HS Music Dept Alumni, from Nor Cal. (enough info) put them in touch with me!

I’m off to Wal-Mart to put energy into Teacher Appreciaton Week. Because our teachers are having a shitty year… they deserve some love!

My students, excessive amounts of coffee, Baja Fresh and a good hockey game.
