Cup o' Reality
grass- teaching, copies and cookies
Drank a cup o' reality at 8:04 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004

I can't believe that it is 8 o'clock and I am getting ready to go to bed. But, it is and I am. Tomorrow I am having my 1st observation with the principal. (It has been rescheduled once so he won't be getting the extravagant show I had originally planned.)

Today I was wondering what it would be like to have the job of the lunch money lady... she always has this big smile on her face as she checks our names in the computer. She is perky and bright as she passes out cookies and checks to see how many milks we are purchasing. And, as I walked into the staff lunch room today with my chips, milk and ham sandwich, I wondered what my life would be like if I had her job and she had mine. Would I be perky and smile wearing? Is it really as simple as it looks?

Or, what if I traded jobs with the copy lady. She has a million stories and will chatter on like it's going out of style with anyone who walks in her room. You would think that we were all her long lost friends. As I stand there filling out slips for copies to fill her basket and she blathers on about the trials and tribulations of running out of colored paper, staples and laminating film, I wonder what my life would be like if those were my professional concerns. I mean, really, running copies can't be all that hard... we used to have to run our own at the small-sad-school. What if I was the copy lady for a career?

Admittedly my parents would have wasted untold sums of money on higher education for me. But, perhaps I would not be going to bed at 8 o' clock. Perhaps I wouldn't be happy at those jobs either. And we all know that the grass is never greener- grass is simply grass and dogs shit on both sides of the fence...

But, I wonder... what would life be like if my only concern was pink paper or white, chocolate chip or sugar or did you put your ID number on that?
