That’s the end of that.
My friend Brett, from work, offered me 2 tickets to the Golden Gophers Hockey game against Wisconsin for Feb 15th. I was to use them to call The Farmer with, to make an attempt at friendship. Because, really, he is such an awesome person so for the first time in my life I wanted to try to be friends with a former lover. And really, aren’t these hockey tickets better than sex? It seemed like an irresistible offer.
I was pleasantly surprised when he answered the phone. I thought it might all be OK.
Then he said, “I think you should take someone else.” “Look, I didn’t want to have to be mean about it.” “I thought you would figure it out when I didn’t call, and didn’t call and didn’t call.” “I don’t want to lead you on.” “I don’t want to go out and do stuff with you; I don’t want to see you.”
Can’t we try friends? I really wanted to be friends with you.
“No, I ain’t gonna’ do that.” “No.” “That’s not a good idea.”
So when we see each other up to the bar, it’s gonna’ be awkward?
“Yep, probably.” “Well, I guess we can talk then.” “But that’s it.”
So that’s it then? We aren’t gonna’ talk or anything?
“Pretty much.” “No, we aren’t” “No.”
He was using that serious tone. The one where nothing is going to change his mind.
I just kept saying, “Wow.” In that shocked-holy-shit how did we get from there to here voice.
So now, all of my Why’s will remain unanswered and so much will remain unsaid. Because this time, I don’t have any other card to play. He shut that door good and tight.
As soon as I stop feeling like shit I’m sure I’ll be fine. Right?
