Background: I had been teaching grades 7-9 and the teacher who had been teaching 10-12 had been a long-term sub since January. While this sub was offered the contract, he was leaving the country to teach over seas. The original High School English teacher had left under duress at the semester.
I swear to God that I warned Superintendent that turning over the entire department in the course of 1 year was not only foolhardy but also a risky proposition. However, if this was really his intent he should post those openings as soon as possible. Mark my words: foolish and risky!
As it played out, they had hired one very young man with no experience for the already open High School position (he had been interviewed back in January at the time of the long term sub.). Upon terminating my contract they offered this man my former job (7-9). Thus at the beginning of June began the search process for another new High School English teacher.
Those of you who are teachers and more so those of you who are teachers here in MN know that this is a dangerous time to be hiring teachers. Goodness I already had my job offer and had signed a contract the last week of May. Considering that the hiring season began in March there are very few excellent teachers left by June. In fact, the population of potential hires is severely dwindling by a week into June.
At any rate, Small Sad School conducts interviews. Two rounds of interviews. They interview 6 people. This is in addition to the old pile of applications left from hiring the long-term sub. All told 7 people have been offered the job.
All 7 have turned it down.
They have re-posted the opening and will be conducting new applications and interviews.
No joke.
And I am vindicated because Superintendent invited this problem upon himself. He did not have to cut me for the 04-05 school year.
The upsetting ramification of all of this is the undercurrent of hopeful talk amongst students, parents, office staff and colleagues that I will be offered my old job back. I’m not sure how I would respond to that offer and I really hope that I don’t have to deal with that situation. Because I really want it.
Fortunately I just can’t see Superintendent eating any amount of crow. At all… and you know that I would be serving up lot and lots of Unionized Crow!!!
